Beyond Engineering
At Davies Maguire we understand that being an engineer doesn’t stop at the end of the work day, and we continue to enjoy our passion for the built environment beyond the office.
School/University Outreach
School and University outreach is something we are very proud to be involved in. For some of us, it was a visiting engineer at our own schools that inspired us to take our first steps down this career path. It therefore seems fitting that we have our own group of STEM ambassadors who visit a variety of schools, participating in careers fairs and engineering seminars. In this way we hope to inspire young people, and open their eyes to a potential future in structural engineering.
We also have affiliations with a number of universities, whose careers fairs enable us to help and inform aspiring graduates regarding a career in structural engineering, whilst also promoting Davies Maguire as a company.
Design Competitions
We have partnered with architects to enter numerous design competitions, particularly those focused on bridge design. Our entry for the Nine Elms to Pimlico Bridge was highly commended and we greatly enjoyed working on a design for a potential new Bath bridge. Competitions allow us to work creatively alongside architects on conceptual designs, and use innovative engineering solutions that may not normally be considered during other projects.
We are always on the lookout for more competition work, as well as partners with whom we can create elegant design solutions.
Architectural Critiques
Our Directors understand that collaboration with architects at the earliest stage in a project often leads to a better, more efficient design. To help architects understand how key this collaboration is, we act as visiting engineers at a variety of universities for architectural critiques. We challenge students and provide structural commentary to help develop their projects and understanding of structures. Davies Maguire are also willing to assist architectural students with their final year projects.
Lunch Time Talks
Continuing Professional Development is essential for the progression of our engineers’ careers. To aid this, we promote lunch time seminars from both internal and external speakers. Knowledge share is very important to us, so if you have been on a course or have learnt a new trick with a piece of software, presenting this to the team is a great way to educate those around you. Our external speakers vary from health and safety experts to product manufacturers, and anyone is welcome to invite a speaker that interests them.
After Hours
Of course, it’s not all engineering related. We enjoy having office socials throughout the year, whether that’s going down to our local on a Friday evening, or a more competitive bowling or darts tournament. The Davies Maguire Birthday Dinner is not one to miss, and the Christmas party is a wonderful way to celebrate another successful year.
We like to be active, whether that be cycling to work or running half-marathons, and we are keen to set up our first touch rugby team this year.
